This course will give you the tools and skills with which to conduct qualitative research for academic (eg. final year project), professional and personal purposes. You will learn about a number of data collection techniques like focus group interviewing and participant observation and practice various methods of analyzing transcripts and field notes using tools from linguistics, discourse analysis, ethnography and sociology. You will also learn how computers can make this analysis easier. Qualitative research is a vast and complex field which requires not just a mastery of concepts, but an ability to look at the world in a different way. You will have a chance to practice these skills through a series of practical assignments and a group research project.
