People exhibit
quite remarkable variety in body size as well as in most other
characteristics. The tallest person is nearly 9 ft tall and the shortest
is under 2 ft tall and that doesn't include babies and children. The
average pygmy is more than one foot shorter than the average person from
the Sudan.
Such are the extremes of the world population, but we all know from
everyday experience that there are large individual differences between
people even in a more restricted population like, for example, office
workers.
A population of office workers may include teenagers who have not yet
grown fully, people from a wide variety of ethnic backgrounds, pregnant
women, people in wheelchairs and so on. Who then do we design for? The
general answer is of course the user but in practice, as for clothing,
it is usually not practical or economic, to have standard designs for
ALL the users.
