PhD positions available!

We are currently looking for 1-2 highly movivated PhD students who can begin their graduate studies in September 2022. Interested students can send the following items to Dr. Xiao Li (xiao.li_at_cityu.edu.hk):

  1. A one-page CV.
  2. Transcript of your undergraduate studies.
  3. A two-page research statement. You may discuss your past research experiences and also what you want to do during your PhD studies.
  4. A list of your publications (if any).

PhD Enrollment Requirements

You may find details of the admission requirements of City University of Hong Kong here. In particular, some of the minimum requirements are the following:

  1. BSc/MSc in physics.
  2. A minimum average score of 85/100 on the transcript.
  3. English proficiency required, which can be demonstrated by one of the following:
    1. TOEFL: A minimum score of 79 (internet-based) or 550 (paper-based test).
    2. IELTS: A minimum score of 6.5.
    3. CET6: A minimum score of 490 in the Chinese mainland's College English Test Band 6 (CET6).

Financial support at CityU

All PhD students will receive a studentship of HK$17,500 per month. In addition, students with outstanding academic performance may also receive tuition waiver in the form of a Research Tuition Scholarship. For more details you can refer to this link.

Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS)

Outstanding students will also be considered for the prestigious Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS). You can find out more details from this link. I will just highlight some points here:

  1. HKPFS will mainly consider the student's qualities of academic performance, research ability, communication and interpersonal skills, as well as leadership abilities.
  2. Support from HKPFS:
    1. A monthly stipend of HK$26,600 will be provided for three years.
    2. An annual conference and research related travel allowance of HK$13,300 will be provided for three years.
    3. CityU will provide the same studentship at the same level as the HKPFS in your last year of study.
    4. Students supported by the HKPFS will also receive the Chow Yei Ching School of Graduate Studies Entrance Scholarship of HK$81,096 in their first year of research.
