Professor Tong is a world renowned surface scientist in the area of nanosurface studies. He was invited by Physics Today to write review articles in 1984 and 1975. His works were covered in the Physics in Action section of Physics World, the official publication of the British Physical Society, in Science and Vie, and in the Physics News section of Physics Today. Research results were included in C. Kittel, Introduction to Solid State Physics, 6th Edition, John Wiley & Sons, New York.

Professor Tong has given numerous invited talks at major professional meetings, including invited talks at the March meeting of the American Physical Society (1972, 1979, 1994, 1997, 2001), the American Chemical Society Annual Meetings (1975, 1976, 1980), MRS meeting (1992, 2000, 2001) and the International Vacuum Congress (1977, 1980, 1994, 1998). He has also organized many conferences for the MRS, APS, IUPAPS and IUVSTA.

Professor Tong is the Honorary Director of the Hefei National Laboratory for Physical Sciences at Microscale (2004-present). The National Laboratory is funded by the China Ministry of Science and Technology and the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Professor Tong has published 6 books and over 260 research papers. Many paper appeared in journals with impact factors greater than 6.0 (Science, Advances in  Physics, Physics Today and Physical Review Letters).
