Dr. Edwin Lai joined the department as an Associate Professor in May 1998 after teaching in Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee, USA, for seven years. He has been a consultant to the World Bank, a Visiting Scholar with Boston University and a Visiting Fellow with Princeton University. He got his B.Sc. in engineering from University of Hong Kong, and M.A. and Ph.D. in economics from Stanford University. Dr. Lai's main research areas are international economics, economic development & growth, and industrial organization. He is also interested in studying the economies of East Asia and China. He has published in American Economic Review, International Economic Review, Journal of International Economics and other respectable journals in  economics.

1980-85: Assistant Civil engineer and then promoted to Chartered Civil Engineer in Watson Hawksley Asia Engineering Consultants, Hong Kong. Duties include: design, project management and supervision of construction of a wastewater treatment project for a population of 500,000 and a water supply project for a population of one million.
