DANCING
OUTSIDE HONG KONG
Your dance shoes should be the first thing in your case!!
Don't leave home without them.
The single best source of links to dance groups round the world, at
least in my opinion, is the Grand
Chain, maintained by Ian Brockbank, or you could check RSCDS
website for a list of official RSCDS branches and affiliated groups .
I have no intention of trying to compete or provide any kind of comprehensive
list. This page aims to give you starting point if you plan
to pass through somewhere and are looking for a chance to dance..

In
Asia (under construction - contact details
being worked on)
China:
no dance group in Beijing that I know of, but there's a small group in
Shanghai that meets regularly. Contact the British Consulate there
for details.
Indonesia:
there's no regularly meeting dance group in Indonesia that I know of, but
in Jakarta they hold one of the biggest Highland Games outside Scotland
annually, including a dance competition. It's well worth visiting.
Contact the Java St Andrews
Society for further information.
Japan:
there's lots of SCD in Japan, though you may have to speak some Japanese
to make the most of it. You could try the Scottish Bluebell Group
in Tokyo, or the Tokai
Branch.
Malaysia:
Thailand:
The Bangkok Reel Club dances from 20:00 to 22:30 on the first & third
Tuesdays of every month at Sachayan Court, 27 Sukhumvit Soi 20, Bangkok,
Thailand. For further information, contact Meilan Henderson at rsh@fnmail.com.

In
the UK
Grand
Chain, an Edinburgh Scottish Dancing Resource, lists classes and social
events. Don't be fooled by the title "events on locally" - last time
I looked it included events in Phoenix, Arizona, Geneva and Winchester.
It all depends on your definition of local I suppose.

Dance schools
Once you've been firmly bitten by the dance bug, you may want to do
more than just attend the odd social dance on your holidays. Fear
not, you can fulfill even the worst dance craving by attending one of the
various dance schools on offer. I don't intend to try to give all
the relevant information here, merely to indicate what's likely to be on
offer.
The RSCDS holds an annual summer
school in St Andrews in Scotland in late July/early August, where you can
sign up for one or two weeks. The Teachers
Association of Canada (TAC) also organises a summer school. The
RSCDS
New Zealand branch organises a week-ten day summer school just after
Christmas each year as well as a number of weekend schools throughout the
year. There is also an Australian winter school around June each
year.
Attending a school gives you a chance to really work on improving your
dancing while meeting people and having great fun. I thoroughly recommend
it - though my feet may have some reservations.
