History

The Hong Kong Highlanders was founded in 1988.  The Society was formed by a group of expatriate Scots in order that they could continue to enjoy and participate in Scottish traditions and to ensure that their children would come to know these same traditions while living away from their native land.

The society continues as a social society holding a range of activities throughout the year.  These vary from the type of event which is expected of any expatriate Scottish society, being the same events that they would enjoy at home, to those with a more local or topical slant.

Membership is not restricted to Scots.  Associate membership is available for anyone who enjoys the activities on our program and the membership roll currently carries many nationalities.  Associate Members can serve on the committee, but the office bearers are Ordinary Members.

    Events

The traditional events include a Hogmanay party, a Burns Night celebration, ceilidhs and dances.  Previous years have seen Up Helly Aa, Annual Gatherings and Highland Games.

Merely for fun, there have been Poolside Barbecues, Tram Trips, Junk Trips, Whisky Tasting, Quizzes including a Colonial Trail, Walks and Theme Parties.

Events are also held for children and there would normally be a Christmas and Halloween party.  The age of childhood is not defined in the constitution!!

The programme varies each year.  New ideas are always welcome.

    Dancing

Where there are Scots, there is dancing and we cater for all levels of dancing, from the social dancer to the advanced dancer, children's dancing and adult beginners.  The members of the advanced class provide a demonstration team available for functions in Hong Kong and have also competed successfully at the Jakarta Highland Games.

Now part of the Hong Kong Highlanders, the Reel Club was originally founded for the purpose of providing an "alternative" entertainment for Scots soldiers stationed in Hong Kong.  How successful this was is not recorded.  However, the Reel Club continues to flourish and provides regular dancing throughout the year.

Social Scottish dancing forms part of our calendar and we hold a number of dances throughout the year.  Everyone is welcome to come along, no experience is necessary.  Even dancing is optional, come just to be social.
