BIOSKETCH OF ALAN H.S. CHAN

 

            Dr Alan H.S. Chan obtained his B.Sc. in Industrial Engineering from the University of Hong Kong in 1982. He then obtained his MPhil and PhD in ergonomics and human factors studies from the University of Hong Kong in 1986 and 1995 respectively. Dr Chan had worked in electronic industries and food industries as Industrial Engineer and Technical Services Manager before he joined the City University of Hong Kong in 1989. Before and during the service in the University, he has also been engaging in consultancy work in computerised inventory management system, ergonomic workplace evaluation and design, workflow rationalisation, productivity improvement, and interface design in manufacturing, engineering service industries and banking industry.

            He is a senior member of Institute of Industrial Engineer, Council Member of the International Ergonomics Association, Pan Pacific Council on Occupational Ergonomics, Founding Members of the Provisional Council of the Hong Kong Ergonomics Society, Member of the Manufacturing Engineering Division of the Institution of Electrical Engineers, the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers, the International Society of Occupational Ergonomics and Safety, the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society, and the Ergonomics Society. He is a Chartered Engineer in the UK.

Dr Chan had served in the editorial board of Institute of Industrial Engineering (HK) Newsletter, Journal of Industrial Engineering Research, and Industrial and Occupational Ergonomics: Users’ Encyclopedia.  He is now an editorial board member of International Journal of Industrial Ergonomics and Asian Journal of Ergonomics, and a member of the Subcommittee of Human Systems, Industrial Engineering Terminology Z94.0 Revision 2004, American National Standards Institute.

Dr Chan has been contributing to his profession by continuously serving the Institute of Industrial Engineers (HK) since 1991 in the capacities of Chairman of Engineering Committee, Honorary Secretary, and Honorary Treasurer. He was elected the President of Institute of Industrial Engineers (HK) for 96/97 and was the Director of Institute of Industrial Engineers (HK) from 1992 to 2000. He was elected the Region Vice President (Region 15) of the Institute of Industrial Engineers in 2001 and the President of Hong Kong Ergonomics Society in 2003. His biography has been selected for inclusion in the new Millennium Edition of Marquis Who's Who in the World, Dictionary of International Biography, and Who’s Who in Science and Engineering.
